National's call for more police picked up
National has been saying for three years that more frontline police are needed to tackle spiralling crime, particularly in Greater Auckland, says National's Police spokesman, Tony Ryall. "New Zealand First's statement today reflects the frustration New Zealanders feel about the incompetent leadership this Government is showing in the fight against crime.
"Labour is more intent on having the police issue 30% more speeding tickets this year, than on tackling the epidemic of thefts from cars." Mr Ryall says additional frontline staff will be part of the law and order strategy of the next National-led Government.
"The size of the increase is something that will be negotiated between the coalition partners, in light of all law and order priorities. "Internationally two things are known to reduce crime - the fear of being caught and the fear of incarceration - and a National-led government would focus on both areas. We would also work to prevent crime by ensuring improved literacy and numeracy skills for younger New Zealanders," says Mr Ryall.
