NZ First – Now The Major Opposition Party In Parliament

New Zealand First made the strongest effort possible to oppose the Customs and Excise (Alcoholic Beverages) Amendment Bill.

It was the largest party in the House when the final vote was taken with New Zealand First voting 13, National 10, and Act 3 against the Bill.

“I am delighted that our team maintained its numbers in Parliament, which was an excellent exercise especially for the first term members of Parliament”, said Dail Jones, Justice Spokesman and Junior Whip.

“It is imperative that in our system that there is a strong Opposition and New Zealand First Members of Parliament have shown that they are ready and willing to take on this Coalition Government”.

New Zealand First opposed the increase in taxes on liquor, which would appear to have its effect mainly on older drinkers of port and sherry with little effect on light spirits, the drink of choice for many teenagers.

“These lighter alcopops escaped the tax increase.”

“The Government has raised $18million in taxes as a result of this legislation, but it is on notice that New Zealand First will fight for the rights of working people and the elderly people in this country and the rights of democracy, ” said Mr Jones
