Green Party Co-leader Rod Donald is congratulating the Commerce Commission for rejecting the Air New Zealand-Qantas deal.
"I am delighted that this national asset will continue to be controlled by New Zealand, for New Zealanders," said Rod Donald. "Air New Zealand is much more than just an airline, it is a crucial strategic asset and an internationally recognised symbol of our unique identity.
Mr Donald said a strong, locally owned airline was important to the future of both trade and tourism in New Zealand.
"It is essential that decisions regarding the airline are made in the best interests of New Zealand and the only way to ensure this is to guarantee that it stays in New Zealand control.
"Just weeks after announcing a record half-yearly profit, Qantas has laid-off 1400 workers. How many New Zealanders would have lost their jobs if Qantas was calling the shots at Air New Zealand?
"Remember the words of former Air NZ boss, Jim Scott about what happened the last time the Australians held an interest in our airline: 'Qantas sat at the table and dorked us.'
"The Government should now go back to beginning and call for submissions from tourism operators, exporters and the public and to take account of those views in deciding what is in our national interest.
"The Commerce Commission has kicked the kangaroo out of the cockpit, for the time being. It's now up to Dr Cullen to ensure a kiwi crew continues flying the plane."
