Jobs improving living standards in South Auckland
Impressive improvements in per capita incomes in Mangere and Otara reported by Manukau City Council today show exactly why jobs are our top priority, says Progressive Deputy Leader, Matt Robson - Auckland MP.
"Lower unemployment and better paid jobs have meant the people of Mangere and Otara have increased their per capita income by 14.9 and 23.7 per cent respectively between 1996 and 2001 according to report.
"Jobs are improving people's living standards in South Auckland and that is great news. Jobs are the Progressives top priority because more and better quality jobs are the best way to improve people's living standards. That means more food on the table, better health and better educational achievement for our children.
"The strengthening economy in South Auckland is obviously contributing to reducing poverty and improving the opportunities people have for the future. The report shows that education levels as well as skill levels have increased especially for Maori and Pacific Islanders.
"I am very
happy to see a great increase in Maori professionals in this
report, and more skilled workers in general. Jobs go hand
in hand with social well being that is why jobs are our top
priority in the Progressives and why our leader, Jim
Anderton is focusing on economic development around the
country," said Matt Robson
MP.
