National backs Wellington call on transport

The National Party is giving its strong support to a resolution from the Wellington Regional Transport Forum which challenges current Government thinking.

"I can understand the frustration of those in the Wellington region who have watched Auckland get all the attention at the capital's expense," says National Transport spokesman Roger Sowry. "We strongly support the Forum's call for priority to be given to projects like the inner city bypass, which are important for the development of the Wellington region.

"A fair and equitable transport policy is crucial to economic growth, and there are urgent needs, including the city by-pass and progress on the Transmission Gully proposal," Mr Sowry says

"I look forward to working with them to achieve their objectives.

"It's refreshing to hear this group plans to talk tough with a Government that seems to think Auckland has the monopoly on traffic gridlock," Mr Sowry says.
