Celebration As Homes Secured
A new “landlord”, greater security and a rent reduction is in store for hundreds of low-income Aucklanders from this Friday when the government formally takes ownership of homes previously owned by the Auckland City Council.
From Friday nearly 1700 tenants will now have Housing New Zealand as their landlord, giving them a more secure future after they had previously faced the possibility their homes would be sold by the Council.
Approximately 1200 of those tenants will also pay less rent from this week, because they are now eligible for an income related rent, saving them on average $20 – 25 a week.
Prime Minister Helen Clark will celebrate the handover with Mt Albert residents by distributing Housing New Zealand “welcome packs” and joining with them for tea and cake.
Where: Logan Village, 7a Doreen Avenue, Mt Albert.
When: Friday 28 February 10.30 am to 11 am.
