United Future reaffirms Iraq stance
United Future leader, Peter Dunne, today reaffirmed the party's complete opposition to an invasion of Iraq.
"As New Zealand's UN representative prepares to address the Security Council early tomorrow on this country's position on a potential conflict, I want to make it absolutely clear that United Future would only agree to a New Zealand involvement in war in Iraq if the United Nations agreed to a fresh resolution authorising the action," he said.
"And even then, it is our belief that New Zealand's best contribution would be in the form of logistical and medical support."
"It is in the interests of all nations, and especially small nations, that the rule of international law prevails and a unilateral attack on Iraq would seriously undermine that."
Mr Dunne said it would be in the longer-term interests of the United States and the world if the US were to bring its considerable influence to bear on genuinely resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which is at the root of so many troubles in the Middle East.
