Tertiary Education Organisations New Zealand has eight universities, 20 polytechnics, three wânanga, four colleges of education, over 500 registered private training establishments, 46 industry training organisations, nine government training establishments, 17 other tertiary education providers and seven Centres of Research Excellence.

Learners Over 319,000 learners were formally enrolled in tertiary education at 31 July 2002, an increase of 32,420 students since July 2001.

Enrolments by qualifications level at 31 July 2002 were 8 percent of students in postgraduate level, 39 percent in degree level, 17 percent in diploma level and 35 percent in certificate level.

New Zealand has the highest rate of participation in degree-level education in the OECD.

There were 59,500 Mäori learners in tertiary education at 31 July 2002 compared to 51,600 the previous July.

Adult and Community Education There are over 300,000 enrolments, in community education programmes.

Industry Training Over 83,000 industry trainees participated in structured workplace learning at the end of December 2002.

There are 22,000 employers providing workplace learning linked to qualifications

Modern Apprentices There were 4300 Modern Apprentices working in 27 different industries in New Zealand at the end of 2002.

Foundation Skills More than 30,000 people participated in foundation skills training linked to qualifications during 2002.
