Key Facts Tertiary Education Commission Te Amorangi Mätauranga Matua

The Tertiary Education Commission Te Amorangi Mâtauranga Matua is a new independent crown entity, established on 1 January 2003.

The Hon. Steve Maharey is the Minister responsible for Tertiary Education Commission. The TEC’s board is made up of eight Commissioners, led by Chair, Dr Andrew West and Deputy Chair, Kaye Turner. The TEC’s General Manager is Ann Clark.

The TEC is responsible for:

implementing the government’s tertiary education strategy 2002/07 and statement of tertiary education priorities allocating $1.9 billion to tertiary education organisations according to a new integrated funding framework building the capability and capacity of tertiary education and training to contribute to national economic and social goals advising government on policies, priorities and sectoral performance negotiating a new system of charters and profiles to steer the tertiary education system.

The TEC brings together under one umbrella for the first time all tertiary education provision, funding and research. This includes full-time academic study, on-job and work-related training right through to tertiary research and development, foundation education, distance education and part-time study.

The TEC has taken over the responsibilities and functions of the Transition Tertiary Education Commission, Skill New Zealand and Tertiary Resourcing from the Ministry of Education.

The TEC will also foster active partnerships with organisations and individuals to best utilise the resources and expertise available in the sector. Innovation and the development of new forms of collaborative relationships between government and the sector will become features of the new tertiary education landscape.
