Dog bite case fuels call for ACC review

The Minister of ACC needs to urgently review the case of Christchurch 11-year-old Ryan Becker, who has been receiving compensation after being savaged by a vicious dog says National Party ACC spokesman Dr Paul Hutchison.

“A range of specialists has in the past confirmed Ryan’s condition was linked to the dog attack, but now a further assessment has lead to the sudden removal of Ryan’s support.

“I’m told Ryan was a normal boy prior to the dog attack, but now has recurrent seizures and behavioural problems that make life very difficult for his parents who have two other children,” says Dr Hutchison.

“Previously ACC put in a lot of effort with this case, but the family now feel abandoned.”

Dr Hutchison has been calling for a Select Committee Inquiry into the management of long-term ACC claimants, with the aim of ensuring those with genuine complaints are offered the best rehabilitation and treatment.

“Only last week I called for a four-fold increase in the penalties for irresponsible dog owners.

“Dog attacks on children can be horrendous but most are preventable,” Dr Hutchison says.

“When they do occur the state has a duty to ensure the victims are properly cared for.

Dr Hutchison has written to the Minister of ACC calling for an urgent and careful review of Ryan’s case.
