Fay should be sent bill for rail
Matt Robson will deliver an invoice to the Louis Vuitton Media Centre at 2pm today to be passed on to Sir Michael Fay later today.
“Michael Fay has re-entered New Zealand just in time to get involved in the debate about Rail services and a good demonstration of his patriotism would be for him to pay the people of New Zealand $100 million needed for rail maintenance,” said Progressive MP Matt Robson.
“Fay Richwhite was the Government’s Adviser on NZ Rail from 1990 to 1993 and then distanced themselves from the arrangement in 1993 before they could buy 31.8 per cent of the shares.
“From 1993 on the value of our rail network has been stripped and maintenance neglected so that today we have a service which is run down.
"The dogma of the 1980s and 1990s which led to the sale of strategic assets cost the country dearly but enriched a small elite. The chickens have come home to roost in Air New Zealand and Tranzrail. The public are now demanding that the government play a more responsible role in infrastructure and other strategic assets.
“Michael Fay may have been welcomed into the America’s Cup hall of fame but I think his correct place may be more in 'infamy' when it comes to NZ Rail considering the rail problems Wellington commuters have been suffering of late."
"Now that Sir Michael has declared his patriotism in regard to the Americas cup I hope that he will do the decent thing and arrange for his Swiss bankers to settle the account that I have sent to him on behalf of New Zealanders," said Matt Robson.
