Dunne corrects National’s errors

United Future leader Peter Dunne said today he was fascinated to learn that the National Party is eager to bring about a new general election, just four months after the last one, over the proposed Qantas takeover of Air New Zealand.

“Given National’s disastrous performance at the last election and the party’s continuing decline in the polls, one would have thought such eagerness unwise at the very least,” he said.

“Mr English is just plain wrong with his assertion that today’s decision on the Air New Zealand proposal is under the control of United Future.

“To clear up his confusion, let me repeat: today’s decision will be made by three Cabinet Ministers, without reference to the Labour or United Future caucuses.

“United Future continues to believe the proposal is not in the best interests of New Zealand, or the travelling public, and we will not support any legislation that seeks to advance the proposal.”

Mr Dunne said United Future believes the proposal is too important to New Zealand’s economy to be rushed and he repeated his call for a much wider public debate to be held so that politicians, the public and the Commerce Commission were much better informed before final decisions were reached.
