Strategy calls for action on biosecurity
National is challenging the Government to turn talk into action on biosecurity following the release today of a draft strategy by the Biosecurity Council.
“This strategy shows that, at last, threats to our biosecurity are being taken seriously. But let’s hope it doesn’t end up choked in red tape as it moves through a six-month submission and drafting process,” says National’s Biosecurity spokesman, Shane Ardern.
“Bureaucracy can be a wonderful stalling mechanism for a Minister trying to excuse an abysmal biosecurity record.
“It’s been obvious for some time that a lack of co-ordination exists between the various biosecurity authorities, more money should be spent and that more efficient border controls are needed. The Painted Apple Moth and the Varroa Bee Mite are clear examples of what happens when action stalls.
“This strategy is a step
forward. Now it’s up to the Government to show it can give
biosecurity the priority it deserves,” says Mr Ardern.
