New Zealand First Trade spokesperson Dail Jones has pointed out that the cost of doing business globally is likely to increase if appeals to the Privy Council are abolished.
He said that removing the well understood nature of the Privy Council would create uncertainty about investment in New Zealand.
“The Privy Council gives credibility to investment in New Zealand as a final decision-making court for New Zealand.
“The Government shows a total disregard and lack of understanding about international business investment in New Zealand if it continues with this misguided unilateral proposal.”
Mr Jones said that many overseas businesses worked under a different legal system and had neither the time nor the inclination to understand New Zealand law but the Privy Council gave credibility and integrity to it.
“Most of the cases that reach the Privy Council are commercial and have an international flavour. We simply cannot afford to throw away our legal system like this,” said Mr Jones.
