Human face to Telecom charges

The case of Northlander Max Allan shows the impact Telecom’s rural charges are having, says Northland MP John Carter.

“Max Allan is a solo father living in a valley in Taipa, Northland. He has an intellectually handicapped 13 year old daughter who is an insulin-dependent diabetic. It is absolutely essential he has access to a phone to reach emergency services.

“Max was originally quoted $300 by Telecom for a standard connection, but now discovers the actual bill will reach $2,500. Neither cellphones nor emergency phones work in the valley.

“It is totally unacceptable for public safety to be put at risk by Telecom’s change in policy.

“The whole point of the Kiwishare agreement was for the Government to secure affordable phone services for people like Max Allan and his family.

“Telecom has announced it will review the change, but there is still no comfort or guarantee for rural communities throughout the country,” said Mr Carter
