Challenge for Peters to define "One People"
Challenge for Peters to define "One People"
Winston Peter’s extremist views on immigration are divisive and do nothing to progress New Zealand, says National Ethnic Affairs Spokesperson Pansy Wong.
“Peters’ One People vision of New Zealand needs to spell out which profile of One People he is expecting new migrants to become,” says Mrs Wong, New Zealand’s first Asian MP.
“Is it the late
night drinking and scuffling behaviour of his that is most
appropriate for his One People, or do we all need to be
sports fans, or involved in cultural pursuits or the Maori
way?
“The reality is that New Zealand is one country
with many people and we need leadership in debating and
championing shared values such as a sense of fairness, self
reliance, strong community, enterprise and an inclusive
society where new migrants are not unfairly targeted for
political advantage.
“Winston Peters’ inflammatory comments are not the way to have a sensible and rational immigration debate.
“His continued targeting of communities of a non-English speaking background indiscriminately ensures that those communities are not getting a fair go,” Mrs Wong said.
