Fisheries Inquiry Continues Despite New Probe
National’s adamant a Select Committee considering allegations of corruption within the Fisheries Ministry will not be put off despite an investigation announced by the State Services Commissioner.
“It’s extraordinary that Michael Wintringham should conclude there’s now good reason for an independent inquiry when just a week ago the Government was saying there’s no point,” says Primary Production Select Committee chairman David Carter.
“The probe into the scampi fishery will go ahead as planned at the next committee meeting on Thursday.
“The State Services Commissioner also makes reference to two previous investigations, one by the Serious Fraud Office, and agrees the allegations lack sufficient substance and are without foundation,” Mr Carter says.
“The question needs to be asked, why have an investigation, when it appears he’s already be agreeing with the conclusions others have made?”
