BIA must give public evidence to Weathertightness Inquiry

The Building Industry Authority must give public evidence to the Government Administration select committee Inquiry into Weathertightness of Buildings over the rotting homes issue, says National Housing Spokesperson Dr Wayne Mapp.

"While the Government Administration Select Committee has received approximately 230 submissions for the Inquiry the BIA has not made one. The BIA is one of the key agencies related to this issue and has a serious responsibility to be accountable.

"By not making a submission, the Authority is avoiding public scrutiny of their actions. The excuse that they are providing advice to the Select Committee does not wash.

"The public will want to know in full detail what the BIA knew about the rotting homes crisis, when they knew it, who they told, and how they intend to fix the problem.

"The way to achieve this is for the committee to invite the BIA to give public evidence to the inquiry. The BIA have to be seen to be accountable - despite much public demand they are doing nothing to fix the Building Code," Dr Mapp said.
