“Thoughtless politicking by John Tamihere has condemned more Maori children to brutality and even death “ says New Zealand First MP, Brian Donnelly.
“John Tamihere has simply not understood the issue. Section 59 does not just provide a parent the right to smack. It provides them the right to thrash their kids. It gives them the right to leave their kids with bruises.
“That American woman, Toogood, caught on security camera beating her child would get off under New Zealand law. Those who want to retain Section 59 condone that woman’s behavior.
“While we retain a law that says it is alright to beat kids we will maintain our scandalous child abuse and murder statistics.
“The unhappy fact is that Maori children are disproportionately represented in those statistics. John Tamihere has just ensured it remains that way,” says Mr Donnelly.
