Port Of Gisborne A Disaster Says Brown
New Zealand First is calling on the Government to immediately take over running the Port of Gisborne, which has lapsed into a state of chaos.
Transport spokesperson and former sea captain Peter Brown said the administration of the port was a shambles and the place had become dysfunctional.
“The port records are missing and those trying to run the place are facing extreme difficulty and frustration.”
Mr Brown said the problems appear to have developed since the disastrous grounding of the log carrier Jody F Millenium earlier this year.
“Staff have been sacked or have apparently disappeared and the place is being run by some sort of ghost squad.
“This is a serious situation and urgent action is required before there is another maritime disaster at Gisborne.”
