Preliminary Findings on Defence HQ Break-in
Preliminary Findings on Defence Headquarters
Break-in
Minister of Defence Mark Burton will receive a progress report on last weekend’s break-in at Defence Headquarters late today.
“Preliminary information suggests that serious lapses in security procedures occurred, both in the actions of some personnel and through the failure of components of the building’s surveillance equipment.
“These findings clearly represent serious problems with security procedure. I know that Defence Force chiefs take this as seriously as I do, and I fully expect that action will be taken by them that is consistent with the seriousness of those problems.
“This action must address equipment, security problems and staff actions that night.”
Mark Burton stressed that these findings were preliminary, that the police investigation is continuing, and that there was more work to be done on reviewing the building’s security.
“I have released this information
because of the considerable public interest in this issue.
However, until I receive a full report and consider its
recommendations, I will not comment further.”
