Centralised Negotiation at Heart of Pay Shambles
Centralised Negotiation at Heart of Pay Shambles

Reports of possible further industrial action by secondary teachers highlight the failure of the centralised pay negotiation system, ACT education spokesman Donna Awatere Huata says.
"Today, PPTA President Jen McCutcheon told the union's annual conference that industrial action would be necessary, should mediation break down with the Ministry of Education over the issue of teachers with experience equivalent to a degree being party to the 12.1 percent pay rise over three years proposed for degree-holding teachers.
"The antiquated negotiation system between the PPTA and the government is responsible for ongoing uncertainty surrounding the teachers' pay deal.
"Under ACT's proposal of devolved funding, this wouldn't be an issue.
"Individual schools and communities should have the freedom to pay good teachers what they are worth, instead of being dictated to by government bureaucrats and unionists," Mrs Awatere Huata said.
