Honour Your Election Pledge Says NZ First

New Zealand First has called on the Government to honour its election pledges and accept the social security legislation that abolishes income and asset testing for elderly people in long term care.

At present the Government is rushing through changes to a bill that would have abolished this income and asset testing in two weeks.

Rt Hon Winston Peters said a so-called mistake in the bill was actually the policy contained in Labour’s 1999 and 2002 election pledges and he believed the Government should honour its promises.

He called on United Future and the Greens to vote against the law change to force the Government to stick to its word and ease the burden on families with elderly parents in care.

“This is simply another case of the broken promises that we warned about when Labour produced its plastic card of political pledges.

“The about-face shows that Labour’s promises are not worth the plastic they are written on.”

New Zealand First policy is for the removal of income and asset testing for long stay geriatric public hospital care services and asset testing for long stay geriatric private hospital care.
