US Stance Vindicated by Iraqi Backdown

Tuesday 17 Sep 2002 Ken Shirley Press Releases -- Foreign Affairs & Defence
The unconditional acceptance by Iraq of United Nations weapons inspectors is a vindication of President Bush's strong and determined stance, ACT Deputy Leader and Foreign Affairs and Defence spokesman Ken Shirley said today.
"Saddam Hussein's Iraq has openly flouted UN resolutions for over four years. It is clear that without President Bush's initiative the procrastination and open defiance would have continued.
"The New Zealand Government's failure to offer moral support to this initiative at the critical time will not go unnoticed but I now call upon the Government to make all efforts to repair the diplomatic damage and fully support the inspections," Mr Shirley said.
