Conflict of interest threatens transport safety commission
Roger Sowry - National Transport Spokesperson
Revelations that the Transport Accident Investigation Commission’s media contractor is working for Air New Zealand reveals a dangerous conflict of interest, says National’s Transport spokesman Roger Sowry.
“Today in Parliament the Minister of Transport refused to accept there was a conflict, and has refused to act. This is despite TAIC themselves raising serious concerns in their briefing papers to the Minister.
“How can the same person possibly do the same job? It’s like putting the fox in charge of the henhouse.
“The Minister needs to ensure that this arrangement is stopped and that TAIC’s independence is maintained. It is outrageous that the Minister won’t take advice or do anything about this issue.
“TAIC also has
serious funding problems, a lack of independence from the
Ministry of Transport and a 50% staff turnover, all of which
shows the Minister has some major problems to deal with,”
said Mr Sowry.
