Government Fails Again On Biosecurity
Reports by MAF that the painted apple moth may have spread beyond the West Auckland area come as no surprise, says
National's Biosecurity spokesperson Shane Ardern.
"Three months ago, the Primary Production Select Committee was alerted to this possibility, but the Government did
nothing.
"It is only now considering whether it should move to management of the moth pest, as opposed to eradication. Yet again,
it has failed to respond quickly and effectively.
"Management doesn't work, as was proved with the varroa bee mite, and this procrastination is just another way of saying
the painted apple moth is here to stay.
"Competent border control to stop the entry of these pests is what's needed. Controlling this threat to our forests,
horticulture, environment and economy has to be a top priority for the Government.
"A major threat by pests won't wait for delayed Government decisions. Once again, it is our major export earners who are
at risk while the Government ties itself up in red tape," says Mr Ardern.
