Greens retain independence

The Green Party has decided not to enter into a confidence and supply agreement with Labour, Co-leaders Jeanette Fitzsimons and Rod Donald announced today.

"Labour's bottom line that the moratorium on commercial release of GE must be lifted in October next year means that we are unable to reach common ground on GE," Jeanette Fitzsimons said. "Nor did Labour offer any other significant policy outcomes in the other areas we campaigned on.

"However, there has been no breakdown in relations between the two parties and we are still discussing with Labour the process for how policy we hold in common can be advanced over the coming term.

"We are talking with Labour about a review of ERMA," said Jeanette Fitzsimons. "If that can deliver a satisfactory outcome then that could help build a basis for closer cooperation in the future."

"We explored all forms of relationship with Labour and mutually agreed that neither a three-year nor a short-term confidence and supply agreement were workable options," said Rod Donald.

"Negotiations over the next few weeks will confirm areas of policy and legislation where we will cooperate with the Government and ensure the smooth running of the House."
