In Search Of Truth Or Power?

11 July 2002

New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters has repeated his call for an urgent independent inquiry to ascertain the truth about the corn controversy.

“That is the only way that we can establish whether or not the Government has been involved in a cover up. What is certain is that the Greens did know about this issue yet chose to keep quiet about it until the middle of an election campaign,” Mr. Peters said.

“This is an issue that should have been sorted at the time. Here we are in an election campaign and a book is published by a Green candidate. If there was genuine concern wouldn’t you want the public to know at the time? Would it be responsible of someone who discovered a radiation leak (say) to write a book rather than immediately warn the public?

“If this election was being held later in the year as it should be when would this GE ‘revelation’ have been made? Let’s get to the truth of the matter but let us also examine the political motives of the Greens,” Mr Peters urged.
