Line In Sand Suddenly Shifts
27 March 2002
Yesterday, the Prime Minister said New Zealand would not support the extension of the war on terrorism shifting into Iraq, today she is saying New Zealand would consider extending its support for the war on terrorism beyond Afghanistan. What will her position be tomorrow, says National Party Leader, Bill English.
"For a person who protested against the Vietnam War, this is an extraordinary turn of events and I, like many other New Zealanders, want her to expand on exactly what she means. I am sure the Alliance Party and the Greens would like to hear more too.
"President Bush appears to have got what he wants; a further commitment to war in other countries. It is not hard to work out who the winner was from today's meeting. Helen Clark got nothing on free trade.
"Helen Clark's u-turns will dismay many of her supporters and we all look forward to further explanation of the new policy," says Bill English.
