Lee Realises that Farming Kiwi Actually Works

The Minister of Conservation Sandra Lee has finally worked out that farming kiwi actually works, ACT Conservation
Spokesman Gerry Eckhoff said today.
"The announcement of sanctuaries being funded to ensure the survival of the kiwi in the `wild' was made by the Minister
recently. This is exactly what I suggested one year ago, - when I was met with howls of laughter and derision.
"Farming of any endangered species essentially ensures its survival.
"It is generally accepted that the kiwi will be extinct in the wild within 20 years. ACT New Zealand believes in
practical solutions to environmental problems. These may appear `novel' at first, but if the Minister can work out the
merits after 12 months, then there is some hope left for our endangered species.
"The next step for Sandra Lee is to understand that legalising the trade in kiwi will create investment, and guarantee
survival of the species. I am sure it matters little to a kiwi whether they live out their full entitlement of life
behind a farmer's fence or a DoC fence.
"Nature can no longer take care of its own in New Zealand.
"Common sense and willing landowners must be employed to guarantee our national icon's survival," Mr Eckhoff said.
