The Education and Science Committee will next meet on Thursday 14 February. In this meeting, it will conduct hearings of evidence on the 2000/01 financial reviews of the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology and the Crown research institute, AgResearch Limited. These hearings will be open to the public, in Room G.011, Parliament House.
The committee is currently inviting submissions on the Tertiary Education Reform Bill. The bill establishes the Tertiary Education Commission (incorporating Skill New Zealand), extends the requirements for charters and introduces profiles, sets out a new funding approach, and includes provisions relating to the industry training system, the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, private training establishments, and the establishment and disestablishment of institutions. The committee sat this week to hear evidence from the Ministry of Health on the 2000/01 financial review of the ministry.
Justice and Electoral (Wendy Proffitt, SC-JE@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met on 30 January to consider the Sentencing and Parole Reform Bill and to deliberate on its financial review of the Abortion Supervisory Committee for the 2000/01 year. The committee’s next meeting is on 11 February, to continue consideration of the Sentencing and Parole Reform Bill.
Local Government and Environment (David Bagnall, SC-LGE@parliament.govt.nz)
On 13 February, the committee will meet to consider the financial reviews of the Department of Conservation and the Ministry for the Environment and will look at two bills, the Rodney District Council (PENLINK Toll Road) Empowering Bill and the Hawke’s Bay Endowment Land Empowering Bill.
The committee is currently receiving submissions on the Local Government Bill, a comprehensive revision of the general law relating to local government in New Zealand. Copies of the bill can be purchased from Bennetts Government Bookshops, and is available to view on the Department of Internal Affairs website (www.dia.govt.nz). The closing date for submissions is Friday, 22 February 2002.

The committee's next meeting will be on Thursday, 14 February 2002, when it will consider the review of the Office of Treaty Settlements, its inquiry into the Crown Forestry Rental Trust, the Te Uri o Hau Claims Settlement Bill and the Te Whanau-a-Taupara Trust Empowering Bill.
