Videos Launched To Support Early Childhood Teachers
Videos to improve the use of the early
childhood curriculum were launched today by Education
Minister Trevor Mallard as part of Early Childhood Education
Awareness Week.
Empowered to Learn : Te Whariki for Infants and Toddlers and Empowered to Learn : Te Whariki for Young Children were developed primarily to support early childhood teachers’ professional development, but will also help families and communities understand the early childhood curriculum.
They involve teachers discussing their experiences, demonstrating a range of good practices and show everyday experiences of children and teachers in a range of early childhood settings.
“The videos emphasise the importance of quality interactions between teachers and children and highlight the value of having positive and purposeful relationships between teachers and children.
“Providing rich learning experiences in children’s early years sets a strong foundation for life.
“Research shows that quality early childhood programmes can and do make a difference to children’s learning – particularly for those children who come from low socio-economic families,” Trevor Mallard said.
The Te Whariki : Policy to Practice series is also currently being developed for tamariki and kaiako in Maori immersion settings.
Trevor Mallard will be attending the Te Tari Puna Ora o Aotearoa family picnic on the Beehive lawn from 12-12.30pm.
