GOVERNMENT'S DEEDS FAIL TO MATCH ITS WORDS
“Conservation Minister Sandra Lee’s apparent outrage at the departure of a Japanese fleet to seek and slaughter whales in the Southern Ocean sanctuary must have been expressed with forked tongue,” New Zealand First leader Winston Peters has said.
“This statement comes from the same Government that allowed the sell off of our fisheries when the Japanese fishing company Nissui was allowed to buy Brierley’s share of Sealord’s fishing quota.
“We noted at the time that Nissui is a subsidiary of Nippon Sui San, the world’s largest whaling company. The time to take a stand was before this Labour Government sold out New Zealand’s vital fishing interests, and before it had demonstrated by its actions that its words count for little” Mr Peters said.
