Local Government Review a Threat to Business

Local Government Review a Threat to Business

Monday, September 3 2001
Gerry Eckhoff
Press Releases -- Governance & Constitution

ACT Local Government Spokesman Gerry Eckhoff says business has every reason to fear the forthcoming review of the Local Government Act.

"The Government-Greens dominated Select Committee will ensure the Government agenda of increased local government influence throughout the public service will flourish.

"As a result, businesses in this country will have to compete against their own local bodies.

"The review is clearly designed to achieve increased social and cultural agendas of the far left.

"While an improved relationship may well occur between central and local government the ratepayer will clearly carry the cost of this government agenda.

"The business climate in NZ is increasingly hostile to those who have trouble enough competing against the rest of the world ' let alone against their own local authority.

"This review is yet another example of wealth transfer which is occurring overtly and covertly under the socialist agenda of Helen Clark and the Greens," Gerry Eckhoff said.
