SAVE THE SOUTHERNER
Green Party co-leader Rod Donald will join Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt in a day trip on the threatened Southerner train tomorrow.
The Mayor and the MP will both ride in the buffet car on the first service to Edendale at 9 am on Saturday.
Mr Shadbolt invited people to make the excursion and show they are interested in rail travel before Monday's meeting with the new owners West Coast Railways in Dunedin.
The train will travel from Invercargill to Edendale on Saturday, and from Invercargill to Bluff on Sunday. More than 1800 people had already paid to take a trip with all eight services now sold out.
"When Tim asked me to match him by under writing this venture for $1000 I thought I'd better put my money where my mouth is. With all the trains now full I'll only have to buy my own ticket," Rod Donald said.
" More importantly, the success of these excursions is a signal that we will be able to save the Southerner," he said.
