Government Must Relieve Apple Growers of Agony
Government Must Relieve Apple Growers of Agony
Apple
growers will be horrified and disgusted to learn that ENZA
has wracked up potential debts in excess of $90 million,
Owen Jennings said.
"This perilous position for the main exporter of apples puts pressure on the Government to act.
"The Minister of Agriculture must assume leadership for the industry, stop procrastinating and act on the evidence he has from Crown Law and the regulating body, the Apple and Pear Board. He must act to relieve apple-growing families of the agony they face," Owen Jennings said.
ACT Leader Richard Prebble wrote today to the Speaker, Jonathan Hunt, seeking an urgent debate on the crisis facing the apple industry.
"When over 30 per cent of apple growers face financial ruin because of ENZA and the Minister, it is certainly time for debate and action," ACT MP Owen Jennings said.
