Jackson Gives Homage To Frank Bernard

Leader of Mana Motuhake and Alliance MP, Willie Jackson gives homage to Frank Bernard.

"Frank Barnard was a staunch protector and fighter for workers rights who had a great ability to communicate across cultures.

"I was particularly impressed with his ability to advocate for and communicate with Maori workers.

"He was a respected and familiar character in both his community and the union movement and was a veteran of the 1951 waterfront lockout.

"I first met Frank Barnard in the 1980s while working with him as a branch president on the Auckland Freezing Workers Union executive. I remember him fondly as an old stalwart who knew how to take the heat, win a fight and have a bit of fun on the way. In 26 years, I was the only person to challenge him for his position.

"His dedication and commitment to the workers as President of the Auckland and Tomoana Freezing Workers Union was exemplary.

"He will be remembered fondly by both my Maori and Pakeha colleagues," said Willie Jackson.

The funeral is being held at St Matthew in the City, Auckland, Thursday (tomorrow) 19 July at 10.30am.
