MARK WELCOMES PAY RISE FOR TROOPS,
BUT…..
“Today’s announcement by the government that
troops are to receive a pay increase is welcomed by the New
Zealand First spokesman on Defence, Ron Mark.
“I hope it is neither too little nor too late,” Mr Mark said.
“The real question is, whether the government’s commitment to our troops is sufficient to encourage married Junior Ranks to return for a second, third or fourth tour of duty in East Timor.
“Given our need to restore peace and stability to
that region, the truth is that
New Zealand has no choice
but to remain their until such time as the
East Timorese
people have established a Defence Force capable of standing
up to Indonesia and the marauding militia. This could
realistically see us still there in five years time,” said
Mr Mark.
“I call upon the government to stop paying lip service to the men and women of our Defence Forces and to tell us straight if they are going to get a pay rise before Christmas and how much it is likely to be,” said Ron Mark.
