East Timor Decision Cause For Real Concern

Monday 11th Dec 2000 Richard Prebble Media Release -- Foreign Affairs & Defence

The decision to commit the New Zealand Army to another two rotations in East Timor is a matter for concern, said Hon Richard Prebble.

“East Timor is already the biggest commitment by the New Zealand Army since the Vietnam war.

“The current rotations are only being achieved by the Army cutting back on basics like training, education and other core activities.

“The New Zealand government has not yet spelt out a clear exit strategy, and there is real concern that in May 2002 the government will again renew this commitment.

“ACT has consistently pressed the government to proceed more rapidly with the transferring of security to East Timor’s own personnel. One of the costs of independence is taking responsibility for one’s own security,” said Hon Richard Prebble.
