Government Losing Two Votes Great For Capital’s Town Belt

The government’s loss of two votes in parliament this afternoon is great news for Wellington’s town belt, said ACT leader and former Wellington Central MP, Hon Richard Prebble.

The losses, the first time the government has lost a vote on any legislation, happened when Parliament supported amendments put forward by National deputy leader Wyatt Creech, and strongly supported by ACT leader Richard Prebble, to give greater legal protection to Wellington’s town belt.

“The vote is a humiliation for local MP Hon Marion Hobbs. Ms Hobbs won Wellington Central due in a large part to her promise to provide statutory protection for the Town Belt. Instead her name is recorded as voting against extra statutory protection, and therefore, breaking her campaign pledge.

“The Minister of Health, Annette King’s defeat on the motion is a sign that the Rongotai MP has lost the confidence of her fellow MPs.

"While Ms Hobbs hopes of re-election have suffered serious damage, the Wellington town belt is assured a secure future after the government’s parliamentary embarrassment” said Hon Richard Prebble.
