The Government’s inability to make up its mind on transport matters is holding back much-needed road improvements, said
ACT Transport spokesman Penny Webster.
At the post cabinet press conference Prime Minster, Helen Clark, was extremely elusive on questions regarding roading
policy.
“Now summer is with us, weekend road traffic will face increasing delays in, out and around our major cities and holiday
spots. Labour has the figures, work has been done on the alternatives, so why can't a decision be made?
“ACT believes the current road funding policy is foolish when uncomplicated alternatives are readily available. It would
only require a simple change of legislation to allow private companies to build or alter roads. We are already falling
behind accepted international standards.
“This new structure would encourage competition leading to greater driver satisfaction, increased constructions and
higher safety standards. Australia came to this conclusion years ago and have implemented the hugely successful BOOT’s
(Build, Own, Operate, Transfer) scheme.
“While Labour cabinet Ministers may have use of a chauffeur the average Kiwi, especially in Auckland, is crying out for
a positive and timely solution,” said Penny Webster.
