PM double standards over pay rates

Helen Clark lashes out against top pay rates when it's politically convenient and hopes the public will ignore big pay deals of her own doing, National's Industrial Relations spokesperson Max Bradford said today.

"Helen Clark's outburst over Dr Brash's pay rates is another case of double-standards.

"She's happy to take pot shots at the Governor of the Reserve Bank for what he's paid. But she's paying out the equivalent of an over $500,000 annual salary to her colleague David Caygill to head the Electricity Inquiry.

"They claimed they would be a frugal Government, put an end to extravagance and golden handshakes.

"They haven't done a thing.

"Golden handshakes have continued - and so have huge consultancy fees.

"Former Labour Deputy Leader David Caygill got $1500 a day for 71 days to head the Electricity Inquiry.

"That's an annual salary of over $500,000.

"Add on top of that his $50,000 payment for chairing the ACC, David Caygill has to be one of the highest paid political appointments we've seen," Mr Bradford said.
