Simon Upton's job an honour for NZ

Published: Thu 21 Sep 2000 04:06 PM
Simon Upton's decision to take up a role with the OECD was a wonderful opportunity for him and an honour for New Zealand to have a person of his ability working in the environmental field at an international level, Opposition leader Jenny Shipley said today.
"He goes with the very best wishes of his colleagues.
"He will, however, be greatly missed by the caucus and the National Party. Simon has made a very significant contribution to the Party since coming to Parliament in 1981 as a 23-year-old.
"His intellectual leadership is outstanding and his political ability, his debating skills and sharp sense of humour have been greatly appreciated."
Jenny Shipley has asked John Luxton to be acting Foreign Affairs spokesperson, and Bill English to look after superannuation until she considers a minor reshuffle later in the year.
Simon Upton will resign in the New Year to take up his role.
"It is my hope that Alec Neil will accept the opportunity to become National's new List MP when Simon steps down," Mrs Shipley said.
