Family Values - Chinese Moon Festival's Key Message
The Wellington Chinese community and supporters will get together to celebrate the Moon Festival for the first time tomorrow, National MP Pansy Wong said today.
"A special Moon Cake has been created for the celebration of the Moon Festival to be held at Parliament.
"Tomorrow is August 15 according to the Lunar calendar and we will be celebrating it at 5.30pm at the Beehive Banquet Hall.
"The theme of the Festival is 'Family get together and well being'.
"It is particularly timely to celebrate and highlight family wellbeing now when there is huge public awareness and concern about child neglect and abuse."
Mrs Wong noted that the origin of the Moon Cake was in itself fascinating history.
"It was created back at the Yuan dynasty where the majority Han clans were ruled by the iron fists of the Mongolian nomads. Hans wrapped the message to stage an uprising inside Moon Cake, a cake that did not appeal to the Mongolians."
