'Nader For President' Drive Kicks Off

'Nader For President' Drive Kicks Off In Wellington

Green-leaning American citizens in New Zealand have started a drive to enrol their compatriots to vote for Green presidential candidate Ralph Nader.

The internationally famous consumer advocate is standing for the American presidency and is being endorsed by the Green Party of America. Nader is already polling seven per cent and is seen as a threat to Democratic candidate Al Gore's bid for the presidency.

Nader's running mate for Vice President is Winona LaDuke - America's first Native American vice-presidential candidate and a well-known and respected human rights campaigner.

"Ralph Nader has always been a hero of mine," said Wellington Green Party Co-convenor and dual American / Kiwi citizen David Weinstein.

"I left America for New Zealand in 1981 and I haven't exercised my right to vote in Federal elections since, as none of the candidates have inspired me," said Mr Weinstein.

"This time around I'm thrilled that we have a real choice at last for a candidate who is not backed by big business who is campaigning on healthy democracy and environmental sustainability."

Mr Weinstein said he was actively encouraging Americans in New Zealand to register to vote and to vote for Nader. He said most New Zealand based Americans didn't even realise they could even vote in the US presidential elections.

Green-leaning Americans throughout New Zealand are now offering to help American citizens to register to vote, and are offering information on the Nader campaign.

David Weinstein said he was happy to give advice and send registration material to American voters in New Zealand.
