The ACT party is amazed that Green MP, Sue Bradford, is proposing an Employment Relations Bill amendment, when she would not support the same amendment in select committee, said ACT Leader Hon Richard Prebble.

Greens Employment spokesman, Sue Bradford, said today that she would propose an amendment that would reinstate an expanded clause 66 into the Employment Relations Bill. The Greens amendment would have required a successful tender to hire the employees of the previous contractor.

“In select committee, Sue Bradford, put forward this mad amendment. Alliance MP Willie Jackson said he was in favour. Labour said no.

“ACT said we would not support the proposal in the House, but we moved an amendment to have the law draftsman craft such a proposal, which NZ First supported. National abstained – so the Greens had a majority (4-3) to have the proposal examined.

“Committee chair, Graham Kelly, called an adjournment for a whips meeting, where the sound of broken bones could be heard. When the committee reconvened, Ms Bradford withdrew her motion. I refused to withdraw my amendment, which National had also decided to support.

“To defeat the Greens proposal, Sue Bradford had to vote against a motion to investigate the practicality of her own proposal.

“How can Sue Bradford expect any MP to support her amendment in Parliament when she voted against it in select committee?

“Sue is a lamb in select committee and a lion in Parliament,” said Hon Richard Prebble.
