United: Ban All Whaling Companies From Our EEZ
United New Zealand leader, Hon Peter Dunne, is calling on the Government to ban all foreign fishing companies with whaling interests from operating within our Exclusive Economic Zone.
Mr Dunne says that three Japanese fishing companies - Maruha; Kyoku; and Nippon Suisan - own 96% of the Japanese whaling fleet.
"Already, one of these companies, Maruha, is seeking access to our EEZ."
"That application should be declined under the good character provisions of the Fisheries Act 1996."
"But the government should now go one step further and make it clear that any and all overseas fishing companies with interests in commercial whaling will be banned from operating within our EEZ," Mr Dunne says.
