The ACT Party is to target Jeanette Fitzsimons and the Coromandel electorate, said ACT Leader Hon Richard Prebble.
The Greens hold the balance of power in Parliament over the union-promoting Employment Relations Bill. ACT has received strong representations from Coromandel business and farming representatives worried about the Bill’s effects.
“As an electorate dependent on tourism and agriculture, this anti-business measure is not wanted by the people of Coromandel.
“The Greens were elected on a mandate that promised to oppose the use of urgency in Parliament, yet a ‘behind closed doors’ deal has been struck with the Labour/Alliance coalition to rush the Bill through Parliament.
“ACT is calling on Jeanette Fitzsimons to put the Coromandel electorate ahead of party political deals and vote against the Bill. Today ACT launched a FaxAttack in the electorate informing voters of the Greens policy, and the adverse affects it will deliver them.
“Next week, ACT will hold public meetings in the area to give locals the opportunity to express their dissatisfaction with Ms Fitzsimons position.
“There is no doubt that the majority of businesses in Coromandel are overwhelmingly against the coalition’s Employment Bill.
“Jeanette Fitzsimons holds a ‘National’ seat – the farming and tourism electorate of Coromandel. If she does not vote against the Bill then there is no way she will be re-elected in Coromandel,” said Hon Richard Prebble.
