Doone’s departure the best
decision
National Leader Jenny Shipley today said she agreed with the Government’s action which led to the departure of Peter Doone as Commissioner of Police.
Mrs Shipley said that as Prime Minister she had been briefed on the election night incident and had asked for an investigation.
Mrs Shipley said she had briefed incoming Prime Minister Helen Clark on the issues during the transitional period.
“The Government has made the right decision to secure an early retirement and the Opposition looks forward to the full details of the deal the Prime Minister has done with the outgoing Commissioner becoming public.
“Politicians and police should now put all their efforts into guaranteeing the continued high standing of police in the New Zealand community,” Mrs Shipley said.
