Shock Outcome - The Green Party looks
set to enter Parliament after special vote counting shows
leader Jennette Fitzsimmons won the Coromandel seat. Ms
Fitzsimmons is tonight flying to Wellington. The vote will
be confirmed later tonight.
But TV One sources suggest
that the Green leader has taken the seat off
National.
This means a significant reshuffle of the
makeup of Parliament.
The Greens get six MPs in
Parliament. Labour/Alliance coalition will have 60 MPs, one
short of an absolute majority. The coalition government will
need Green Party support to pass Bills in Parliament.
The
Green Party has said that it will support the coalition of
issues of confidence and supply.
The surprise win in Coromandel means National will have 39 MPs, ACT will have 9 MPs, Greens 6 MPs, New Zealand First will have 5 MPs and United will have 1 MP. National MPs Maree Hasler and Arthur Anae will be dropped as Members of Parliament.
Labour expects to pick up one extra list MP in the special votes. This would bring it ahead to secure a majority in the House.
Tauranga - New Zealand First leader Winston Peters looks set to keep his Tauranga seat by a slim margin. But if he loses the 323 lead he had on election night to National’s Catherine O’Regan then New Zealand First will have no MPs in Parliament.
Linda Clark Live - There will be no change to the coalition Government. Helen Clark has the numbers. But there is trouble for Helen Clark in that the Greens policy is more in line with the Alliance. So there could be a shift to the left in policy making.
Votes Missing - There are 100 votes missing from the Rangitekie electorate. The National candidate has a slim lead over the Labour candidate by 68 votes. No one can be called a winner in the seats until the missing 100 votes can be found. Labour and the Electoral Centre have called in the Police and lawyers.
